How to Plan a Romantic Engagement Session that Feels Like You | Advice from a Portland, Oregon Wedding Photographer

My favorite thing about B + K’s engagement session was the amount of intention that was put towards planning the session. If you are also interested in planning an engagement session that is full of romantic, intentional details, this might be for you!

1. Think of Meaningful Locations. B + K decided to do a two part engagement session. The first location was in and around their current home. This is where they spend a lot of quality time together. We used locations in their home that were significant to them. The Second location was at Blairally, where they enjoy 80’s dance night together! In a similar note, a lot of couples will choose landscapes that are inspiring to them, or things like where their first date took place, their favorite coffee shop, any place that holds a special place in your heart!

2. All About The Details! The next part of planning is to make sure to incorporate things you already love doing. One of the best ways to feel natural in your photos, is to do things that are already familiar to you, that you know you are going to have fun doing together! Infuse your session with personal touches, whether it's incorporating favorite hobbies, your pets, or cherished mementos. Embrace authenticity, letting your personalities shine through candid moments and genuine emotions. B + K had so many special little touches, from wearing outfits that special significance, to utilizing corners of their home that held special details and helped tell their story.

3. Communication is key! – collaborate with your photographer to make sure you are all on the same page about your specific vision and preferences. Discuss styling options, from wardrobe choices that complement each other to props that enhance the narrative of your love. I will usually send out a questionnaire, or offer to do a facetime or google meet so we can talk about it.

Lastly, embrace the romance of the occasion. While I fully believe your wedding day is not meant to be a photoshoot, your engagement session is a whole different story. Use this special time that we have carved out to really be present with each other. Planning a wedding can be stressful and chaotic, this is a great time to really take a moment and pause and appreciate the season of life you are in. It us such a unique and special time that goes by really fast. Enjoy each other's company and let me document what life looks like for you two right now. With thoughtful planning and a touch of romance, your engagement session will be an unforgettable celebration of your journey together.

If you want help planning an engagement session you will love, feel free to email me any questions you might have! I would be so honored to help document this special time, and be a witness to your unique love story.
